Talk given at NYU *[AI SYMPOSIUM - ARE THERE LIMITS TO AI?](https://as.nyu.edu/research-centers/maisonfrancaise/calendrier/events/fall-2023/ai-symposium---are-there-limits-to-ai--.html)*
Seven principles of data feminism:
1. Examine power
2. Challenge power
3. Rethink binaries and hierarchies
4. Elevate emotion and embodiment
5. Embrace pluralism
6. Consider context
7. Make labor visible
In today's world, *AI is power*.
And this power is wielded deeply unequally, particularly by corporations and the Global North.
*Feminism is also about power.* This is arguably the central project of feminism of the past few decades.
For a while, people were considered with "brittleness." AI has only been optimized for certain contexts or groups.
For me, feminism is...
- a belief in equal rights for all genders.
- utilized political action to realize that belief.
- a set of theories and ideas that help us understand challenge unequal power.
Intersectional feminism is not only about women or even only about gender. It is about *power*— who has it and who doesn't.
Are there limits to AI? Yes! Deep, profound limits.
Intersectional feminism, anti-colonial feminism have a real role to play towards developing AI for liberation and not just wealth extraction.
